The costume may not have been essential during the first stages of becoming a Villain, but You will need one to pull off Your first heist. By now You should know what colors suit You, what sort of Evil work You’ll be doing, and wether or not You’ll be wearing a mask. We’ve talked a bit about presenting Yourself, and by now You should be ready to take it to another level.
Classic Black -The color of choice for many a Villain. Red is also popular, but You could really make any color work.
The Lab Coat – The lab coat is great for going from a day of Evil scheming to a night of Evil work. You could go with white, or possibly dye it another color to better suit You.
The Suit- The suit is perfect for blending just enough with the masses and still looking good. The politically driven Villain will be drawn to the suit, as well as anyone Who has some serious Evil to take care of while performing the day job.
The Mask- By now You’ve decided if a Mask is the right choice for You. If so, it should mesh well with the rest of Your costume. You can choose something simple to hide the eyes, or conceal Your entire head with a helmet.
Foot Wear- The Overlord is a big fan of anything large, noisy, and intimidating. In other words, I like boots, which will go great with the lab coat but not so well with the suit. Foot wear could be a key component of Your costume, or not, it just depends on what You’re looking for.
The Wet-Look Cat Suit- A great choice for the Villainess Who would like to intimidate by wearing something tight and shiny. Male Villains could possibly pull this off as well. Anyone rocking the cat suit needs to spend as much time in the gym as He/She spends in the lab. If not, You could always throw a lab coat over it. Black Milk has some very unique, Villainous and form fitting attire.
Gloves- For the Evil Do-er, glove could be a symbolic element that You slip on before getting Your hands dirty, with dirty, dirty crime. You can evoke this image with a simple pair of dish gloves from the super market. Fingerless gloves, ballroom gloves, kid gloves…..any style could be a great finishing touch to Your costume.
Unusual Shapes- If possible, use some unusual shape and unique tailoring to stand apart from the crowd. Choose a coat with large shoulders, or an asymmetrical dress.
Hair- It can be difficult to achieve the perfect Evil hair-do, especially for the Villainess. To get the ” I just stepped out of a comic book” look, You may want to get a wig. A wig will always be styled and ready for Evil, never fading and freeing You up from countless hours of primping. Again, basic black works well, or use some bright, shocking color to really stand out. Male Villains actually have it easier in this department, You could have a serious case of bed head and still pull off the Your look of Evil.
The Overlord has some favorite sites for Villainous fashions, but They are largely driven by the “gentler” sex. If You have any sites or ideas that pertain to men, leave it in the comments below.
Haute Macabre is My all time favorite fashion site, I’m sure I’ve linked them a handful of times. Great for grown ups who have an appreciation for darker things.
Black Milk has a wide variety of leotards, cat suits, and tights that are comic inspired. Black Milk runs a blog called Too Many Tights…..something the Overlord doesn’t believe in.
Sock Dreams is another purveyor of tights, socks, gloves. Perfect for finishing up Your getup.
You can find Lab Coats online, and The Irongate Gallery has Dr. Horrible style coats in red , white, and green! They also have some steampunk gear.
The process of coming up with a unique costume can be difficult, but also a lot of fun. Hopefully by now You have some ideas and You’re up to the task. Until next time…
